What is Gotukola?
Gotukola (Centella asiatica) is also called "the fountain of life" because according to legend an ancient Chinese herbalist lived for over 200 years as a result of consuming Gotukola. A member of the parsley family, this herb is grown in abundance in Sri Lanka. It has small fan-shaped green leaves connected to long hollow stems. Historically, Gotukola because of its Ayurvedic value has been used to treat syphilis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever and asthma. Today, in western medicine Gotukola is most often used to treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.
Gotukola contains Vitamins A, G, and K and is also high in magnesium. Sri Lankans eat it regularly in salads and porridge to improve sinus, phlegm and arthritic conditions and also to strengthen the immune system. Gotukola powder with milk is consumed to increase brain capacity, soothe mental disorders, and for the treatment of epilepsy. Gotukola is available in stores in the form of teas, dried herbs, tinctures, capsules, tablets, and ointments.
